Cockfields - About Us
It’s hard to imagine a sack of potatoes could lead to the North West’s leading aquatic store but that is exactly what happened at Cockfields ……. selling potatoes at the front gate in 1966, to fruit and vegetables in part of the chicken shed and, in 1999 selling a few goldfish. This then led on to selling tropical fish and, in 2004, marine fish and corals.
Within a few years the business had outgrown the existing building and so a larger building on site was knocked down and a purpose-built building erected. Not only do Cockfields still sell fruit and vegetables, tropical fish and marine fish & corals but they have also expanded the coldwater section and, in 2009, branched out into pond fish where they have, probably, the North West’s leading expert working for them. The tropical and marine sections have both expanded with over 40 marine tanks and 200 tropical tanks. They have also become renowned for their massive selection of Coral Frags.
Add onto this a reptile section selling anything from snakes to spiders, complete with Vivariums and all accessories - which is also run by an expert; a petting farm where the kids can hand-feed miniature sheep, goats and donkeys, see piglets and the famous Obama the Lama; and a café where you can get anything from a cuppa to a full breakfast. There are even a couple of rides to keep the children occupied.
As Cockfields raise their own pigs, they produce their own pork, bacon, sausages and pies and most of the produce used for the full breakfast is their own produce.
Cockfields is continually expanding and, this year will see the expansion of the fruit and vegetable section plus a massive mail order facility for all dry goods and corals. They are stockists of many of the well-known brands such as API, Aquarian, Blagdon, Deltec,, Exo-Terra, Fluval, Hagen, Hydor, Interpet, Juwel, New Era, Nishikoi, NT Labs, Red Sea, Reef One, Reef Scientific, Rena, Reptile-One, Seachem, Tank Tests, Tetra, TMC, T-Rex, Underworld, Zeovit, Zoo-Med to name but a few! In addition all the products are easily accessible so that customers can peruse them with ease.
As if all the above weren’t enough to whet your appetite to visit, Cockfields are open 7 days a week, have a large car park and there are toilets in the main shop. It is also easily accessible for wheelchairs.
All in all it’s a great day out for the whole family – just make sure you’ve allowed a few hours to visit! Cockfields pride themselves on their appearance – not only do they pay special attention to all their livestock but also the buildings themselves where they continually strive to ensure that everywhere is clean and tidy and, due to the size of the building, there is plenty of space to walk round and view your prospective purchases.
